All change! Clarence Dock to become Leeds Dock

The Clarence Dock area of Leeds is about to enter an exciting new era. The new owners of the site are promising to make it a vibrant, must-visit destination and have announced its new name as Leeds Dock.

Home to the Royal Armouries, Clarence Dock was originally constructed as a £250 million mixed-use development between 2001 and 2007. However, since it’s official launch in 2008, it’s struggled to attract visitors and many of its retailers vacated leaving large amounts of empty units.

Last week, the new owners of the development announced plans to rejuvenate Clarence Dock under the name of Leeds Dock. Much of the concrete surrounding the area is to be ripped out and replaced with public gardens and tiered grass banks to provide seating areas for outdoor events. Not only that, a new restaurant boardwalk is to be created bring some of the best food from across the world to the area, as well a fine selection of street food and bars.

Leeds Dock will also be home to a workspace for businesses. Since the Alea casino shutdown in 2013, the space has been left empty. The former casino will be converted into “The Engine’, a new hub for emerging industries to have an office and call home. There will also be further commercial sites developed in the area.

The ongoing issue of how to attract people to the Leeds Dock has also been answered. Exciting water taxis are to be implemented to transport people from other areas of the city, including the popular Granary Wharf.

Work has already started at Leeds Dock and will be ongoing.
