MOBOs Spotlight: FKA Twigs

FKA Twigs Is Leading the Way amongst Her Fellow Female Nominees

The MOBO Awards 2015 are just around the corner and it’s all set to be an incredible evening at the first direct arena celebrating world-class musical talent. Throughout the build-up, we’re shining the spotlight on some of this year’s top acts…

The MOBO Awards 2015 is proving to be a great year for female artists, none more so than the elegant, electronic R&B artist FKA Twigs. She’s no stranger to the MOBOs – last year she picked up nominations for Best Female, Best Newcomer and Best Video.

Raised in Gloucestershire, Twigs trained in ballet, tap and modern dance from the age of 8. Once 17, she upped sticks and made the move to London, landing backup dancer roles for the likes of Jessie J, Ed Sheeran and Kylie Minogue. She soon realised music was her true calling.

Working as a bartender over the next five years, Twigs spent much of her free time in the studio, culminating in her self-released ‘EP1’ on Bandcamp in 2012, followed by ‘EP2’ in 2013 and her debut album a couple of years later. Her most fully realised piece of work, ‘LP1’ received universal praise from critics and fans alike, peaking at number 16 in the UK Album Chart and reaching 30 on the US Billboard 200.

This August, Twigs released her third EP – M3LL155X (or “Melissa”) – which received widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike. It features the full length version of the single “Glass & Patron”, with the accompanying music video up for nomination at this year's MOBO Awards.

FKA Twigs is leading the way amongst her fellow female nominees, with three nominations including Best Female and two (‘Pendulum’, ‘Glass & Patron’) for Best Video. Twigs has chosen her MOBO debut to showcase a rare, televised production. If her past performances are anything to go by, we’re all in for a spectacular treat!
