Council parking in Manchester city centre on the rise
Manchester Evening News has reported that Manchester City Council are set to hike up their city centre parking charges by up to 10% with lots of areas still allowing only 2 hours' maximum stay.
In the Deansgate and King Street areas shoppers will have to pay £3 per hour, and near Piccadilly Gardens, Chinatown, Spinningfields and the Manchester Central area parking will be £2.90 per hour.
The news has upset many shoppers and retailers alike, who are concerned that a rise in parking costs will deter people from visiting Manchester city centre and leave them with less funds to spend in store.
The news is particularly devastating for retailers on King Street where 9 stores have already closed their doors. Business owners have also reported that Sunday trading has been lower since the council introduced Sunday parking charges two years ago.
The council are undergoing a consultation for these higher parking charge plans and if they are approved the charges will increase in June.
